The Lost City of Z, 2016 - ★★★
An film with an old fashioned feel, based on the true story of an expedition to the borders of Bolivia and Brazil to find a city left behind by a lost civilisation in Amazonia. The photography is beautiful, the plot trots along well enough, but I didn’t feel that engaged with the characters. The script was a bit leaden and lifeless, and we never really got to find anything out (or even speculate about) the civilisation or people of the lost city. It does, however, get points for authenticity in that the explorers were wearing mouldy clothes (everything goes mouldy very quickly in tropical forest).
It entertained me well enough, but I didn’t love it.
